As I was traveling the west coast, I discovered my new favorite nutrition bar – packed with gluten-free, dairy free, healthy Omega 3’s and fiber loaded. Not only is the superfood bar made from the finest ingredients, it also tastes great! This is the perfect treat for those athletes who need an easy to carry snack during a long intense bike ride, hike, or just to fill the gaps in their daily food intake. I met the owner, Nicole and learned about her business and how she started making these bars. She is very passionate about her business … and the results shows!! You can find out more about her business at www.elemental-raw.com.

Does heart health have to be red??? I’m suggesting that you think out of the red box and consider to going orange this year for heart health. We are in the peak of citrus season. I was lucky enough to be at a nearby farmer’s market in California during this wonderful peak season. I could not stop sampling the multiple varieties of sweet and nutrient dense oranges. For lunch, I chose a blood orange variety to a mixture of greens, avocado and assorted other ingredients – I have attached the heart healthy recipe.

Think outside the Valencia box….expand your palate and try these varieties:

Blood Orange

Deep red pulp and slightly tart, Blood Oranges provide a strong dose of the anti-inflammatory anthocyanins know to decrease cancer cell growth and assist with heart health.

Cara Cara

A pink tinted variety of the orange provides the carotenoid lycopene an anti-tumor phytonutrient and heart friendly.

Grapefruit

Try a pink organic variety for a sweet-tart treat adding more lycopene to your diet. Narigenin is the key substance in grapefruit known for decreasing your “bad” cholesterol and possibly managing your insulin levels and weight. Caution … avoid grapefruit if you on statin drugs. Grapefruit may interact with cholesterol lowering meds causing a potential overload in the medicine.

Tangerines and Tangelos

Sweeter than oranges but still tangy, these citrus varieties can assist with weight, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease partially due to the antioxidant nobiletin.

Clementines & Mandarins

The sweetest of the orange family, these easy to peel varieties are great replacements for candy with the same orange healthy nutrients. Perfect additions to salads or a grab and go snack!

Most oranges are jammed packed with phytonutrients, pectin fiber that decreases cholesterol and super rich in the antioxidants Vitamins A & C. The pulpy-white part between the skin and orange contains additional nutrients.

This recipes includes other heart healthy anti-inflammatory foods such as avocado, walnuts, flax oil and arugula. Enjoy!!!

Avocado-Orange Heart Boosting Salad

½ clove garlic or red onion (optional)

12 cups mixed dark greens of choice including arugula, baby chard, spinach, and red leaf

2 Blood or Cara Cara Oranges, peeled, segmented.

2 Avocados, sliced

½ cup chopped walnuts (try almonds or pecans)

3 ounces aged balsamic vinegar

Cracked black pepper

1/8 teaspoon sea salt

4 oz. flax seed oil (optional extra virgin olive, walnut, or grapeseed oil)

Optional herbs-

Whisk together vinegar, salt, pepper. Then gradually add the oil and whisk together. May add garlic or small sliced red onion, thinly sliced. Marinade while prepping other ingredients

Clean and dry mixed greens and place in a large bowl

Add oranges, avocados, toasted nuts.

Pour the marinade over the salad. If you toss while the nuts are hot from the oven you can get a wonrful crackle and taste.

Idea: Prep all ingredients ahead except the nuts. Use the juice from the orange to prevent the avacado from turning brown. Heat the nuts right before serving and cover with the marinade. If you can’t find these varieties or oranges, substitute ANY citrus of your choice.

I was at Johnson County Community College for the preview of the new documentary America The Beautiful Part 2. The film is about the adventures of the producer, Darryl Robert, and his discoveries about dieting and weight obsession in our society today. What struck me the most is the discussion regarding the misuse and overuse of BMI was a tool to determine everything from obesity to childhood screening. I constantly avoid using BMI in my practice as I feel BMI is not an indicator of health or good nutrition. It is typically an unrealistic number to meet, and more times than not leads to bad self-image feelings, especially those who are vulnerable. It shames children, keep people out of the military, prevents others from being insured and generally increases prejudice with our medical professionals (not all… but many).

Let’s start looking at the individual and their inside health. Let’s help people feel like they are “in control” of their fuel instead of obsessing over numbers.

Preview the documentary here and let me know your thoughts. America The Beautiful

Tennis Anyone? Five hours and 53 minutes??? WOW….. Novak Djokovic wins the longest Grand Slam final in history, overcoming Rafael Nadal in an epic five-set tennis match in Australia. This was no ordinary Grand Slam! As I watched the last 45 minutes of this awesome duo, it was barely apparent that they had been beating out 70 mph returns for over 5 hours. Both men gave it their all … it was an amazing site!

What kind of nutrition feeds this kind of play? Recovering from sets, hydration, electrolytes, are key as is pre-game nutrition. But day to day nutrition is key to make it to peak performance. Djokovic claims going gluten free turned around his diet. Is Djokovic better this season because the gluten allergy was affecting him physically or is he better because he improved his diet in general? Any thoughts?

This is the year to NOT start another diet! This time let’s look and some real detox recipes to clean out your gut and organized your life.

But the sun is shining today and that can lift spirits. Still, this can be the time of year of stress, lack of Vitamin D and indulgence! The most successful athletes and clients benefit from awareness & accountability for their actions over the holiday season BEFORE the New Year Resolutions. Here are some tips to keep you on track:

1. Drink up! But, make the first drink as close to water as possible. Some ideas? Pellegrino with a touch of cranberry or orange juice, Club soda with lime, Water with lemon peel.

2. Minimize your plate content – choose three things that you would like to put on your plate. Two of the three items are healthy choices.

3. Socialize – talk instead of eating, fidget or play with food… anything to decrease the what goes in your mouth.

4. Enjoy the music – Dance or at least tap your toes! Anything to keep moving. Stand instead of sitting or move from guest to guest.

5. Positive self talk – be in control of your behaviors. Eat ONLY what you really want to eat. This action will improve your energy level the morning-after-the-party.

6. Keep moving! Plan on getting up early the day after a party (and most days) to enjoy a walk, a jog, or any type of activity. Keep this up during the winter months to decrease the risk of seasonal depression.

7. Avoid those that sabotage your goals! I really feel that those people that make fun of healthy nutrition and fitness habits just want someone to over-endulgulge to make them feel better about their own personal poor habits.

Here’s the holiday deal…..

You know what is best for you. If you need some accountability during this time of year please ask. For the first 10 people that sign up for Bodyfuel, Inc’s nutrition coaching package receives a free in office metabolic Resting (RMR) analysis ($50-90 value).
